The Roots: Sarnia Boarder Pass Open

The Roots, Sarnia Boarder Pass Open

This past weekend the Roots Wake Series headed down to Sarnia, Ontario for the third stop of the Nautique cable series; Boarderpass Open presented by Endless Surf.

With cloudy skies and a spotty forecast, the event went ahead with Boarder Pass's own Tim Nixon personally guaranteeing that thunderstorms would stay away. He must have a golden horseshoe hidden in the water because as predicted, the day turned out to be another beauty on the Roots radar. Endless Surf showed up with paddleboard demos, and Nautique pulled in with a brand new 210 that received plenty of attention throughout the day.

The day started off with the Amateur wakeskate divisions heading off the dock first. Jess Woolsey, a new to the scene female wakeskater, managed to stomp a shuv to seal her victory in Women's Wakeskate, and Mackayla Petrie made it worth the trip from Quebec by taking first place in Amateur Women's Wakeboard. Sarnia Boarder Pass's very own “Manager” Matt Hulholland used his home-field advantage to take the top spot in both the Amateur Men's Wakeskate and Amateur Men's Wakeboard, sealing him a spot in the Open Men’s Wakeskate qualifier.

The afternoon was left open for the OG and Open Divisions, and some of Ontario's heaviest hitters were out vying for series points and a place on the podium. With a minor amount of teasing Boarder Pass's Chris Smith stepped up to ride in the OG Division, but his smooth rail tricks weren’t enough to put him above Jay Poole of The Wake Institute. It seemed like almost all of the Open Male Wakeskaters were struggling through their qualifying runs, but DJ Oetting, Tommy Bailey, Jordan Sullivan and Braden Ioi all moved on to the finals. All of the skaters cleaned up their passes for the finals, but none of them were able to top Ioi. Braden put down a nearly-flawless run, and came ridiculously close to riding away from a backside flip on his last pass. The Open Female Wakeboarders were up next, and Ally Boothroyd topped the field. That set the stage for the Open Men's Wakeboard final, and it was chock full of heavyweights. Chris Sinkic, Drew Austin, Robbie McMillin and Christian Primrose all made it through their qualifying heats, and had a viable chance at taking the top of the podium. With Christian stomping a top notch run, it really came down to a battle for second between Drew Austin and Robbie McMillin. In the end it was Robbie’s smooth rail hits that granted him the second spot, with Drew rounding out the podium in third.

The final rounds of awards were handed out under the sun, and a bunch of riders headed back out to catch a few last passes on the cable. The whole weekend was a great success, and none of it would have been possible without the support from the sponsors and the riders who came out to compete. Join us on Saturday, July 21 when we're back behind the boat in Haliburton at the Sharpley Source for Sports Open presented by Mastercraft.
