The 2012 Disney XD Roots Wake Series kicked off with a bang this past weekend. Two days, and two separate events saw the top wakeboarders and wakeskaters competing behind the boat at the Boardsports Open presented by Malibu and on the cable at The Ranch Wake Park Open presented by Boardsports.

Saturday broke under a cloudy forecast, but the rain managed to hold off and most categories got their runs under sunny skies behind Gordon Bay Marine's brand new Malibu Wakesetter. The day got started with the Newbie and Beginner categories, and we saw some of the highest registration numbers ever which means we're definitely doing our job promoting grassroots wakeboarding in Ontario. Riley Dillon, Shane Brandsetter and Carson Jacobs led the way in Newbie Boys, while five-year-old Avery Spalding was our lone competitor in the Newbie Girls category.

On the Beginner side, Cam Spalding stood atop the podium for the boys, and Carly Anderson took home first place for the girls. Mackenzie Petrie and Brayden Beswick were the top qualifiers in Intermediate Men, but Mackenzie couldn't quite put his run together in the final leaving the door open for Beswick to snag the top spot, followed by Jason Simpson and Ryan Galea. Jenn Evans also grabbed first place for the Intermediate Women.

In wakeskate, Jordan Long, Ally Boothroyd and Brady Hicks topped the podium in Amateur Men, Women, and Outlaw Men respectively. In Outlaw Women's Wakeboard, Erika Langman made it apparent that she's back in full force after losing the majority of last summer to a leg injury. Following in here wake were Susie Mallory and Emily Tenwesteneind. The Outlaw Men's Wakeboard division was missing a few heavyweights, but there was no lack of action out on the water. After finishing behind Chris Sinkic in his heat, Andy Milovanovic stepped up in the finals to take the top spot. Sinkic slid down into second place, and Michael McBrearty rounded out the podium in third after qualifying first in his heat. Sebastian Santacroce narrowly missed the cut in the first heat of Outlaw Men, but still managed to take home a new pair of Spy Shades and the Spy Splash Award for best bail of the day.
